Summer Institute for High School Writers and Teachers
TEACHERS
ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
- The Writing Skills Improvement Program of the University of Arizona is offering the Summer Institute for Writing and Thinking Across the Curriculum. This Institute has two goals:
- (1) To raise the level of writing proficiency and facility of 45 selected 9, 10, and 11th grade
- students.
- (2) To familiarize 15 middle and secondary school teachers of diverse content areas with
- utilizing the writing process as a tool of thinking.
HOW THE INSTITUTE WORKS
The Institute will serve both students and teachers:
MORNINGS (9 a.m. - 12 p.m.): Students and Teachers work together as writers, thinkers, and peer editors
Lunch (12 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.)
AFTERNOONS (1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.):
Students attend writing workshops and tutorials
(1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.):
Teachers take English 5970, "Seminar in Writing Across the Curriculum,"
3 credit/gradute course

English 5970, "Seminar in Writing Across the Curriculum, " counts toward the B.A., M.Ed., M.A. in English Language/Linguistics, the Ph.D. in English, RCTE, and LRC and a variety of other graduate programs
Focus - applying current composition theories and practices to the teaching of writing to secondary students in all subject areas
Topics for the course include using writing as a tool for learning in all subject areas, designing prewriting and revising strategies in all subject areas, responding to students' writing, developing students' thinking skills, tapping students' potential, and handling the paper load

This Institute is a recommended
complement to SAWP
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Any teacher interested in gaining practical as well as theoretical knowledge of how writing accelerates learning all subject areas may apply
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING?
Send the following materials by April 30:
(1) An application
(2) At least one letter of recommendation from an administrator
or department head in your school
(3) A statement of your reason for wishing to attend the Institute
Note: If you have not been admitted to the graduate college of the University of Arizona, you must get admitted before you can register. Admission is not automatic with acceptance into the Institute.
