What is the Summer Institute for Writing and Thinking Across the Curriculum?

This Institute has been created to help high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors improve their writing ability in all subject areas.

PLACE: University of Arizona

DATE: July 12 - July 30, 2010

3 Weeks

TIME: Daily, Mon. - Fri.

9 a.m. - 12 noon
and
1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

CREDIT: 1/2 high school credit may be available from your school

Participating in the Summer Institute will help you to:

* Understand what good writing is

* Prepare for the AIMS Test

* Gain confidence in yourself as a writer and thinker

and cultural ideas

in the rest of your high school career

What is the Program Like?

On a typical day, you will spend the morning reading, writing, discussing, and sharing your writing.

In the afternoon, you will attend workshops in which you will experiment with various types of writing for different subject areas.

Then, you will share the drafts of your writing with tutors twice a week. They will point out your personal strengths and weaknesses as a writer and help you to refine your skills.

Who Can Attend?

*High school freshmen, sophomore, and junior underrepresented students may attend free of charge if selected

*Other students who demonstrate financial need may attend free of charge if selected

*Other interested students are welcome to apply and may attend free of charge if selected

*Students must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee status.

*Please note that room and board are not provided by the Institute

*Letter of recommendation from teacher, principal, or counselor

*One page explaining why you wish to attend
